Take Care! Getting Data Off Proprietary Glucometers Gets a Little Easier Glucometers which measure glucose levels in blood are medical devices familiar to diabetics, and notorious for being proprietary.
Gentoo Linux developer [Flameeyes] has some good news about his open source tool to read and export data from a growing variety of glucometers. For [Flameeyes], the process started four years ago when he needed to send his glucometer readings to his doctor and ended up writing his own tool. Previously it was for Linux only, but now has Windows support. Glucometers use a variety of different data interfaces, and even similar glucometers from the same manufacturer can use different protocols.
Getting the data is one thing, but more is needed. Visualization and analysis are missing as well. Also needed are details on protocols used by different devices; [Flameeyes] has only been able to reverse-engineer the protocols of meters he owns. Speaking of glucometers, there is a project for a Universal Glucometer which aims to be able to use test strips from any manufacturer without needing to purchase a different meter.
By the dLife Editors Looking for a blood glucose monitor? This meter uses only FreeStyle Lite test strips. Blood Sample Size Required: 0. I just started using the Relion Prime meter because I'm pre-diabetic and therefore my insurance company won't cover the cost of testing. This has become a very popular meter for the ininsured and underinsured. Any possibility of supporting uploads from this? If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link: This is one of companies that is not really cooperating.
For creating support for devices, we need at least protocol that company uses, and on other side, we need someone to help with testing. Most of devices currently supported were done by me, since they are available here where I live, some were added by users or at least tested by users.
If you can get protocol from company and protocol is not to hard, I can add this device, if you help me with testing it. If protocol is simple this will do, if not we will have to make enivorment for build on your machine and I can remote connect to you I have done this once before, and it somehow worked then Since you are user, contact them tell them that you use our software, and that you would like to have their meter supported and if they would be willing to release protocol Now if this is USB device, you are not in luck, since so far I haven't come arround to support any real USB device some meters have USB cable, but that is not real USB, it's just USB-to-serial converter, which we have supported some of them.
Your glucose meter might be keeping secrets from you. If and when you see a message on the screen alerting you to a "High" blood sugar, the meter probably knows more than it's telling you, as in the exact numerical value associated with that warning.
But the device makers decided that we don't need that information This came to light in our brains, at least following the March 25 announcement that almost two million LifeScan OneTouch VerioIQ meters were being recalled across the globe. LifeScan issued warnings on three brands of its OneTouch meters, totaling over 1. About 90, of its popular VerioIQ meters here in the U. The reason for the recall? The meter software isn't properly registering extremely high blood sugars.
At a certain point the meter shuts down with no warning and without alerting you to the hyperglycemic danger. Geez, the number is oddly specific So, who would have thought the meter actually knows when you've tipped past ? Why No Numbers?
